Northern Ireland Piping & Drumming School celebrated the achievements of their Lisburn students, with over one hundred and thirty guests at the annual Presentation of Certificates evening in Laurel Hill Community School on Wednesday 13th May 2014.
The new Mayor Thomas Beckett was the special guest of honour for our evening of celebration. He congratulated students on their impressive results and declared his own special interest in drumming and percussion. Seventy certificates were presented to students and the Instructors also received their awards for the two day "Instructors Course".
Grahame Harris completed his Grade 8 after taking his practical exams over the last term with Andrew Wright which is a significant accomplishment.
Mark Armstrong (NIPDS Director) confirmed NIPDS Management Committee have secured Arts Council funding for 2015-16and said he was immensely proud of the dedication and commitment from every student over both terms.
He told guests that the External Examiners report, prepared by Emma Collins from Laurelhill Community College, commended NIPDS for the content and standards of marking in our examinations with only minor discrepancies to be addressed.
The presentation evening concluded with a generous light supper, with refreshments for our guests provided by the Noade family, before our students and instructors performed a varied musical repertoire featuring Gavin Baillie Drum Solo with Gavin Noade and Terry Smyth, Dylan Coyle and Aaron Henderson both solo piping and and incredible solo vocal performance by Daniel Kerr who was quite simply magnificent.
NIPDS wish to thank Major Sinclair Memorial Pipe Band under Pipe Major John Fittis for their entertaining concert performance and their ongoing support to band members attending our Lisburn School. We also wish to thanks Kim Harris and her team for capturing the images of the evening event.
The Enniskillen Presentation of Certificates took place in the Royal British Legion on Friday 15 May 2015 and a very enthusiastic crowd turned up on the night.
Mr and Mrs Ivor Spence were the special guests to present over eighty certificates to students and seven instructors certificates which is an incredible achievement for the Enniskillen campus. Ivor recounted his special memories for growing up in Enniskillen as a former pupil of Portora and warmly congratulated students on their achievements this year.
Mr Graham Gunn (St John Ambulance) also presented the first NIPDS First Aid certificates for our instructors as part of our continual professional development.
Mark Armstrong reiterated the key points from his Lisburn speech and thanks everyone for their support for NIPDS from the instructors, students, management board and especially Cecil and Gloria Jones to make Enniskillen such a success.
He thanked Katherine Stewart for her excellent work with the Highland Dancers who gave a very energetic and enthusiastic display of their skills.
Mr Sam Bailie who founded the NIPDS attended both events to present a new award for the Student of the Year in each campus In memory of his son the late Gavin Bailie. Gavin's unique talent and contribution to our teaching materials will be celebrated each year with the names of the successful student added this special memorial trophy. Peter Chambers (Lisburn) and Kim Gunn (Enniskillen) were the first recipients selected by our instructors for this important award to honour their hard work and success throughout both terms.
